Do automatic cars stall when they go roll backwards in drive?

My friend has a 98 sunfire(auto). He recently drove up a hill, and let the car roll back in drive. Within 2 secs. the car had stalled. Do car companies have a auto shutoff when cars roll backwards to quickly in drive.

It shouldn’t and in any case it has to be a hell of a hill for a car with normally functioning automatic trans to roll backwards in drive. I wonder if the trans is slipping…

no they don’t,if his died on him while doing this ,something caused it,its probably nothing too serious though but if he wants to he can take it to auto zone and have them scan the computer free of charge, and that will tell him if it has any trouble codes on it,there may not be anything wrong with it,cars will die out sometimes in different situations, good luck with it.

Not that I was aware of. But, spinning the trans in reverse when it’s in a forward gear could have an effect like that. Basically, engine rotates one way, trans the same way (in forward). Like back pedaling a bicycle (without the free spinning hubs) stalled the engine.

No, there is no shutoff.
What is happening is the fluid connection in the torque converter is allowing the car to slide backwards. This does add load to the engine, and that added load at idle is what is causing the engine to die. If the elements in the torque converter are worn, the car will not stall, and will continue to roll backwards. It is also a sign of a leaking torque converter that is low on fluid.

no there isnt it shouldent shut off
i drive an auto trans 4 wheel drive if im off road and need to back down a hill i do it all the time you let off the gas just enoulf so it rolls down that way you dont lock up a brake and you can power back up if nessory
you always use a little brake just in case it stalls so you wont roll it
